ODISBEY, A NY Hiphop Producer

Shining a light on the hiphop scene thriving in Upstate New York. While NYC often takes the spotlight, cities like Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, and Albany are brewing their own unique flavors of hip-hop culture.

From Albany, Upstate NY is home to a diverse array of artists, each bringing their own stories and sounds to the forefront, one in particular artist is ODISBEY

In this work we create a brand and identity, and website to showcase the artists merch in an interesting layout.

It's an understatement to say that ODISBEY loves vinyl, as he's always chopping up sounds to create atmosphere in their sample based beats.

Sample-based beats, particularly those involving vinyl sampling, are a cornerstone of hip-hop production. It takes a lot of work to craft even something that last less than a minute. From crate digging, to layering and stacking samples, pitching and beat stretching and effects.

Here's ODISBEY's quick guide to how he makes his beats:
Crate Digging: Dive into old vinyl records, thrift stores, or online vinyl shops to find obscure and unique samples. Look for albums across various genres like jazz, funk, soul, and classical for rich textures and interesting sounds.

Chop and Flip: Experiment with chopping up samples into smaller sections, then rearranging them to create entirely new melodies or rhythms. This technique allows you to manipulate the original sample creatively.

Layering and Stacking: Layer multiple samples on top of each other to create depth and complexity in your beats. Combining different elements from various records can result in a rich and dynamic sound palette.

Pitch and Time Manipulation: Explore altering the pitch, tempo, and timing of your samples to fit your beat's vibe. This can involve speeding up, slowing down, or pitching up/down the samples to match your desired tempo and key.

Effects and Processing: Experiment with adding effects such as reverb, delay, distortion, and EQ to your samples to enhance their character and blend them seamlessly into your beat. Processing can help tailor the samples to fit the mood of your track.

Drum Breaks and Percussion: Utilize classic drum breaks from vinyl records to lay down the rhythmic foundation of your beat. Look for iconic breaks from funk, jazz, and soul records that have been sampled in countless hip-hop tracks.

Creative Sampling: Think outside the box by sampling unconventional sounds or spoken word snippets from vinyl records. Incorporating field recordings, movie dialogue, or ambient noises can add a unique flavor to your beats.

Respect Copyright Laws: Hide your samples.
